Tricks to Choose Better Fonts

Around eight years back when I started my professional career as a Graphics designer in a Real Estate Organisation, in that initial stage the only thing that was stuck in my gut was to choose better fonts while designing anything. Today also I see lots of people out there, especially students or freshers who are still really confused about the same problem.

But from my continuous efforts & my past eight years of experience, now I think I have improved this part to some extent, and so today I’m going to explain to you which tricks I use to choose fonts to make my designs look better & beautiful.

Whatever the points I’m sharing with you are from my past several years of experience.

Before starting anything about selecting fonts tricks we should have the knowledge about “What actually Fonts & Typefaces are?” so,

Difference between Font & Typeface?

So, the people who think that fonts & typefaces are the same things, No! it’s not.

Every kind of text around us is a typeface, it could be on a website or on a brochure, it’s simply a typeface.

The font is just a file for your Operating System, there are some Font Formats or different kind of categories of fonts, like:

  1. OTF (OpenType)
  2. TTF (TrueType)
  3. WOFF (Web Open Font Format)

Serif & Sans Serif Fonts

You may begin deciding which of these two categories is best for you by understanding the differences between them. Fortunately, it's not too difficult to differentiate between the two.

The name itself contains the solution.

A serif is a decorative stroke that completes the tip of a letter stem (also known as the letter's "feet").

Likewise, a sans serif font lacks serifs (thus the "sans"), whereas a serif font has them.

Selecting a right pair

Choosing the right font is the most time consuming task if we compare it to actually design making process, we should consider few factors while choosing the right font and those are:

  • Font’s multiple Attributes
  • Loading time
  • Font Scalability
  • Contrast Ratio
  • Pairing right Contrast & Font Weight

Do not choose too many Fonts

It can be tempting to pick a variety of typefaces for your designs, but doing so can actually detract from your identity.

Use one to three distinct typefaces as a general guideline when selecting fonts.

Any more than that will cause your designs to look cluttered and will cause the various fonts to start competing with one another.

Choose the font which resembles the right Brand Identity

San serif and serif fonts can both be effective when used correctly and selected for the right reasons. The selection of a typeface that works well for your brand is of utmost importance.

Finding a typeface that will convey your brand's values to readers and give them the correct first impression is key.
