Design System to Learn for Better Product Design

Lots of MNCs like Google, Apple, and Uber use their personal design systems or pattern to establish their brand identity for instance if you open any google application like Drive, Keep or Analytics etc. and Platforms like Android, you will experience a similar design journey. So, that is Google's design System which we call Google Material Design.

So, now the question arises:

What is a Design System and why do we need it?

Design systems are the pre-defined UI Kits and components we use for developing our designs according to the guidelines of the respective platforms we are designing them for.

The success or failure of a group of creative people can be determined by a design system alone.

So, here are the top 5 Design Systems which I use and want to recommend to all beginners to start learning and adapting these for better product design.

1. Google Material Design

There is no introduction needed to explain about Google. They developed “Material Design” which was made available to the public, set the standard for design. The design industry has never previously seen components sorted and catalogued with such clarity thanks to the absolute excessive attention to detail. They organised and provided meaning to the atomic design principles, upon which all modern design systems are based.

To assist teams in creating excellent digital experiences for Android, iOS, Flutter, and the web, Google developed the Material design framework.

Apple HIG(Human Interface Guidelines)

Well Apple needs no introduction because they are the pioneer in this industry. Apple was the first company who introduced GUI(Graphical User Interface) through their Mac in 1983.

Design is not about how it looks or feels, design is all about how it works. - Steve Jobs

Main Elements of HIG:

  • Foundation
  • Patterns
  • Components
  • Inputs
  • Platforms

You can create a fantastic experience for any Apple platform by using the advice and best practises found in the HIG.

Shopify Polaris

Shopify is a SAAS(Software as a Service) based eCommerce platform and it also provides their design system to follow by the designers and developers.

This design system is my personal favourite because in my professional career i have designed more than 200 apps for Shopify App Store.

From Shopify Polaris one can build an app which is more relevant for Shopify’s own environment, it helps to build trust in customers when they buy any app from Shopify App Store.

Atlassian Design System

Atlassian, which produces project management and collaboration tools like Jira and Trello that are utilised by millions of teams globally, is one of my personal favourite design systems. Their primary interest is in developing agile technologies that support agile teams in maintaining focus while they design, build, and deliver products.

The design approach of Atlassian reflects and supports how the potential of every team can be unlocked via digital experiences. Their mission is to increase the productivity of individuals and teams.

So, these were my top Design Systems to learn, what you think can be added in the list, please share your experience in the comment section below:
